Where the Wild Things Were: Life, Death, and Ecological Wreckage in a Land of Vanishing Predators - William Stolzenburg

Intellectually most people realize that a healthy ecosystem needs its large predators, like grizzlies, wolves, killer whales and sharks in order to function properly but when we hear news stories about encounters between humans and said predators most of us probably have a tendency to leave intellect at the door and cringe in fear.  This book illustrates how predators both large and small make for a healthy ecosystem and does this beautifully in a both informative, entertaining and non preachy way.  Who would picture the cute and cuddly sea otters as predators? but they keep sea urchins the predators of kelp forests at bay and ensure a robust and healthy sea coast.
